Civil war veteran Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) travels by horseback to read news from across the world to audiences with no other way to get information. In the forest, he finds a girl who has been living with a Kiowa tribe for six years since her family was attacked. Kidnapped at six, she is no longer able to speak English. Kidd decides to take her to her family in Castroville, Texas, but the journey proves to be a dangerous one.
