What does Daniel Craig think about a female Bond?

Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Sep 22, 2021

Daniel Craig in No Time to DieWith Daniel Craig having filmed his last stint as James Bond in the soon-to-be-released No Time to Die, there's been talk for some time of having a woman play the role next.

Craig was asked about it during a recent interview to promote the upcoming movie, and it seems he's not keen on the idea. “There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color,” Craig told the RadioTimes. “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

Barbara Broccoli, longtime producer of the Bond movies, said something similar last year when the subject of a Black or female Bond came up. “James Bond can be of any color, but he is male,” she told Variety, adding, “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters… I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”

However, there is a new female spy in No Time to Die opposite Bond played by Lashana Lynch, best known for her role as Maria Rambeau in the 2019 Marvel film, Captain Marvel.

Rami Malek and Billy Magnussen are also new members of the cast this time around, having joined returning actors such as Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw and Ralph Fiennes. Although No Time to Die was delayed due to the pandemic, fans will finally be able to see the film when it opens in theaters on October 8, 2021.  ~Alexandra Heilbron

I have to agree with Daniel C. I have been a fan of the novels for over 40 years and have seen all the films. This character was created by Ian Fleming and this is part of the attraction, a single male, ladies' man, cold blooded professional secret agent. There was Modesty Blaise, a female secret agent, created in the 1960's. They could create a whole new female agent but it would have to completely deviate from the Bond series.

I agree it's Bond, James Bond not Jamie Bond. Although there are great women action stars Bond should not be one of them.

Some scripts, of course, are based on source material--novels and so on. Others are original screenplays. I believe there will be enough of the latter in times to come to allow for dynamic female characters and would prefer that those based on source material remain as written. James Bond should be male

I've never watched a Bond film with Daniel Craig in it. Firstly, I don't like him. Secondly, I am a due hard fan if the earlier Bonds, especially Sir Roger Moore. A female can't be any worse than Craig himself.

He's still living in the dark ages -- the world has changed, time he got with it. With his chauvenist attitude he's probably much more for female bondage rather than one as a Bond movie actor. He's blatantly flashing his lack of respect for women.

I am not a sexist man nor Im i against female leads in movies , but If i may be honest I am sick and tired of Hollywood having to bend to certain groups , that demand that certain roles be given to either women or gay people.. just create new roles and stop changing storylines that were created for male gender actors . What would we think if Tomb Raider was cast as a male or if Aliens with Sigourney Weaber would be updated with a male lead , I mean how stupid is that let things be, and create new characters based specifically for women or gay specific charcters..please as a fan of already established characters and storylines stop messing with the past and create a future with strong female leads which work and are respected.

James Bond is a male character and should stay that way. It is insane that casting a woman to play James Bond is even being considered!!

Invest a hundred thousand dollars in a female James Bond movie. Then enjoy not only no profit, but getting back only 10-20% of what you put in.

What if a male was cast as Wonder Woman and he had a huge dong??? What if Charlies Angels were played by 3 emasculated men from France. What if a blind person was played by a deaf person? Do you now see how ridiculous this is all becoming? Make Nick Fury white again! Get rid of woman Thor and who cares what sexual preference someone is when they watch a film.....

  13. Peter Upmanis • 9/23/2021 1:59:55 PM

Are you serious? What bond has a sex change, Jane bond. Ridiculous!!!! Bond has always been male. Leave as is.

James Bond is a male character. Period. Why not use your "Hollywood Imagination" and think up a completely new idea for a kick a** female spy character. Trying to showcase "Diversity" doesn't mean recycling the same thing but changing the gender of a character... Look how well it worked for Ghostbusters 🤦🏻‍♀️

To the person who has never seen David Craig play Bond. You May not like him but he is one of the best Bonds of all the movies. And Bond is and should remain a strong male character. Atomic Blond was great and that character could do more movies. Have her own franchise. Not Bond.

  16. Paul • 9/23/2021 3:20:16 PM

I meant Daniel Craig. Boy do I feel dumb.

Bond films , and similar style films have been going on since the 60s and earlier all with male leads. Jinx could have had a spinoff and started a Cia spy version with female lead and storylines to suit new world issue's Grew up on Roger, in theater, connery on TV ant the year 2 bond films came out same year on big screen. Dalton , Brosnan and Craig all have there own style playing the character. The writers and casting need to reflect the next person to take on the roll or successor as like M

I agree with sentiments from others...there are other characters that stories can be made for and built on. You don't need to change JB to anything other than what he is. Like someone said, do you not believe in yourselves enough to have your own stories? Honestly, the backlash alone is enough to stay away from doing that stuff. There are characters that can be given their own stories and some surprising ones. The initial MCU took non A list characters and made them A plus after all (ie. GOTG, Iron Man, Thor). 2 stunt castings that I think worked are Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin and Samuel as Nick Fury. In Bond, Felix also works, Actually, they could give another 00 their own series really and that would satisfy all obligations of the moment without ruining the brand. I hope bond gets the timeline moved back to the 60s. i would also like the Higson and Gardner books adapted (as well as Benson and Kingsley Amis). Even the Warren Ellis comics would be great. The Gardner books might actually work for a Woke near Bond (given another 00 number and not Bond himself) in a way because there are a ton of them and sort of have their own story arch that could be sliced off from the main narrative.

Bond is and should be male. Now, when, if ever, will we see a screenplay of Colonel Sun?

  20. Billy • 9/24/2021 7:10:35 PM

I don't agree. I think woke liberalism is the best. Who cares about pensions, parks, adequate infrastructure for working class folks. Who cares about issues that are good for all people. The only thing that proves advancement of society is if we go back and replace all hetero white males with other people who aren't that. Victory!

  21. Mike • 9/25/2021 5:03:56 AM

Jane Bond? It's been done. Amber Lynn played her in the 1980s. And it was hot.

  22. Stevie • 9/25/2021 5:39:40 PM

It has to remain a man playing Bond, women will not be able to do the stunts a male can.

  23. David • 9/27/2021 12:08:51 AM

Exactly! Don't take a male character and just make him female. That's stupid and disrespectful to women. As if women can't be cool or interesting unless she takes a mans role.
