Evan Hansen (Ben Platt) writes himself a letter as per his therapist's instructions. At school, a boy named Connor signs Evan's cast and says now they can both pretend they have friends. Connor takes his letter, but when he commits suicide and his parents find the letter, they think Connor wrote it to Evan. Later, Evan is asked to speak at a memorial service and he opens up his heart, saying no one should feel alone. His message is caught on video and uploaded to the internet, where it reaches many other young people who feel the same way.
