American defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley) want to represent Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim), who is believed to be the head recruiter for 9/11. He has been held for fourteen years at Guantanamo Bay without being charged, but claims he is innocent. Slahi, who is from Mauritania, is afraid to speak because he fears he'll undergo even more torture and possibly death. Meanwhile, military prosecutor Stuart Couch (Benedict Cumberbatch) uncovers evidence that leads him to believe there is a conspiracy.
