Philo Beddoe (Clint Eastwod) lives a simple life in the San Fernando Valley with his pet Orangutan Clyde and his friend Orville (Geoffrey Lewis). He drives trucks for a living and participates in bareknuckle fights on the side for extra cash. His life changes when he meets an aspiring country singer at a local club and falls for her.

However, their newfound romance is cut short when she mysteriously disappears, sending Philo on an adventure to Denver to find her. Clyde and Orville accompany Philo on his journey, and the trio run into trouble along the way and frequently stop to make some money to fund their trip.
